Samir: How are you doing?

Well, Thanx, we are doing very well in this 2006, we are at our best!

Samir: Could you please present you and the band for those who don't know you ?

Everything began when I formed Gory Blister in 1991 with a Three-piece line-up; Raff joined me in 1993. Music was the only dream we had; the story so far, tells that many things, good or bad, happened, but we always walked a long path following our inspiration. In 1995, after releasing two demos, me and Raff moved north to Milan to keep on playing death metal, cause in South Italy it was very hard. The other members quit, indeed. So in Milan we succeeded in releasing our debut mini CD Cognitive Sinergy and we got a new line up to play with on stage. In 2001 we recorded our real first album Art Bleeds and got a deal with Noise records for the Sonickattack project, but it was never realized. In January 2002 GORY BLISTER were on ROCK HARD Germany compilation titled “UNERHORT”. It was an interesting chance to increase the band exposure Europewide. In 2003 Sekhmet records gave us a record licence deal and ART BLEEDS was finally published.

Now here we are to talking about SKYMORPHOSIS our brand new album, under Mascot records!

Samir:How come you named the band "Gory Blister ", what's the story behind that name?

A strange story for a strange name! You know, we formed in 1991 and even then it was not easy to find an original name. At that time I was learning to play drums and I had to play a lot, so after hours and hours I got blisters on my hands. We thought that such things on my hands could represent our rage ready to explode against everyday life. Maybe we wanted to give it a more punk meaning. I didn’t know English very well then and I couldn’t know it sounded so strange. Maybe it does not represent directly what we play, but, you know, in some way, it is original.

Samir: Why did you choose the title 'SKYMORPHOSIS '? What does it stand for? Structures of all time?

I intented to write poems about the universe and the feelings I get looking at summer nightsky. After a bad event in my life I wrote a poem about Sky changing to a nightmare and I entitled it Sky Metamorphosis. To apply the concept to the whole record I changed it into Skymorphosis.

Samir: When did the preparations for the new album start and how did the songwriting process look like?

Usually, we write songs even if we have no particular deadline, simply we love to do it. So there is not a real starting point. After the ART BLEEDS studio sessions was completed, while searching for the new members to join the band for gigs and future works, me and Raff began together writing some new stuff. Usually Raff builds a song structure made of 3 or 4 riffs, including a possible chorus. We arrange it and try to give a certain direction to the song. So when it was time to get the songs for Skymorphosis, we only choose the best stuff written and got the new tracklist of the record. Once in the Fear Studios, we just put in practice all the experiences done after the previous recording sessions and we could follow closely the production step by step in order to achieve the sound we wanted.

Samir: For the Death cover, '1000 Eyes'. What was the reason behind this choice?

We think that Chuck Schuldiner is the godfather of death metal. I personally began listening to Death’s album since the beginning; I have also met him here in Italy a couple of times; I lived with excitement any new release and with fear and despair his illness til death. When Areadeath prod, a chinese label, asked us to take part to a tribute album, we accepted also cause it was the chance to challenge the comparison that many reviewers did between us and Death. We believed that we had to respect deeply Chuck’s masterpiece and tried to play the song the best we could. Hope we succeeded in. At any rate, that comp was not distributed properly, so we asked Mascot to include a remixed version into the new album. We are very proud of it. And at the end you can hear his own voice. I think that is the real tribute.

Samir:What is your favorite song of "Gory Blister" and why ?

Personally I love I Shall Hang Myself. It is a very particular song to be a Gory one. I dedicated it to Sarah Kane, you may know about. She was an English playright who committed suicide in 1999. Some of her dramas are produced worldwide now. She was a sweet poet, I have studied and loved all of her artworks and feel a deep sympathy with her, being both of the same age. She is the first and likely the only artist who has dramaticly crossed the two parallel dimensions that are LIFE and ART.

Samir :What can you tell us about 'ART BLEEDS'. How did you develop the songs, what inspired you?

ART BLEEDS came out of our creative and spontaneous attitude that was evolving better and better; even now we use to let our emotions flow freely and then to capture them into music, trying to shape a song structure able to highlight the right feelings at the right moments; of course this is not a fast process; when we wrote Art Bleeds, it took months before getting the suitable final version. And that's why Art Bleeds is intense, violent, original, sounds Death Metal 100%. We Love it!

Samir:After seeing some of the tour footage, give me a good tour story

Well, it is difficult cause there are many many stories, funny or serious, it depends. I can tell you this one: After 4/5 shows, when we got into the bus and began drinking as every night, Adry was taken apart by Darren (Sadus singer) and they talked a lot drink after drink… the day after Adry told us that he felt different then! We still don’t know what Darren told adry, but from the following show on, Adry has got a very strong impact on stage!

Samir:Do you follow the evolution of the Death Metal scene nowadays ?

It is very difficult, cause of the confusion in the music business. Major labels try to sell what they want only and that’s why they try to forbid filesharing; moreover they put onto the market the old stock at cheap prices in a moment when the whole market lives a crisis. That is not politically correct towards the underground. Emerging bands and small labels have to fight a hard war at this level. Internet and filesharing give a hand, infact I discovered and then bought Darkane records in this way. But major labels are too strong now and they can impose their rules to the business. There are many new interesting bands such as Black Dahlia Murder or Textures, but they still want to sell the new Metallica!

Samir:And what can you tell us about the lyrics?

Well, as I told you above regarding the title meaning, I tried to give a sort of concept to the whole record. While in ART BLEEDS I was triyng to investigate the deep artistic need that pushes someone to express his own art, and the related problems of course, with the new lyrics I have tried to write some poetry myself. Since I believe that art and life are on separate plans, I have searched for a new dimension with its time and space, different from the ones we all can experience in our everyday life. So I used the outer space as metaphor of this new world I wanted to create. Once settled this background, I wrote the lyrics. I have imagined stories between planets and stars and about human feelings towards the deep universe. In Quasars there are two dying stars telling each other the last goodbye, or in The Missing Planet, ther is one star who has committed suicide for love. You will find also a relationship between mankind and a failing God (Skymorphosis, Skin Legacy, Blood-sweating Wall and Black Canvas), but don’t see any religious argument in my lyrics, cause I refer to a metaphysical point of view. My final target is to focus on feelings and to express my own vision of the world around us, but from an external viewpoint, if possible. Life has got nothing poetical, you know.

Samir:where do you see the band in ten years time from now?

Who knows! I would like to see myself on a caraibic island selling ice creams to tourists!!!

Samir:What is your opinion about the Italian metal scene?

Oh, my God! Difficult answer. I may answer by my heart or by my head. By my heart I can tell you that it’s wonderful we are still on the run with bands such as Sadist and Necrodeath. There are also new upcoming death bands such as Infernal Poetry, SlowMotion Apocalypse and Aydra. If I answer by my head the situation is a bit more complex. Here in Italy we don’t have any real metal tradition regarding promoters, labels and audience. Promoters care about foreign bands only, cause they sells better and this depends on buyers! Moreover I have a deeper reflection to do; When heavy metal was born, it was a sort of revolutionary movement, both socially and musically. It carried on a strong contrast against “official” music both in the eighties and ninenties. Then, after Curt Cobain success (think about) metal has become “the official” music, with trendy numetal and all the great re-unions. This process has its consequences in Italy as well, and it is harder and harder to keep the faith, if this sentence is still meaningful now.

Samir:Who are your main influences and what albums made the biggest impacton your life?

Oh, many many albums, but you will notice that they are from a far past… Leprocy (Death), Into The Pandemonium (Celtic Frost), Consuming Impulse (Pestilence), Symphonies Of Sickness (Carcass), Punishment For Decadence (Coroner), Beneath The Remains (Sepultura), Altars Of Madness (Morbid Angel), Dimension Hatross (Voivod).

Samir:How do you think "SKYMORPHOSIS " compares to "COGNITIVE SINERGY" both lyrically and musically?

Strange question. COGNITIVE SINERGY is not a real album. Many things have changed, cause I learned to write better lyrics and we improved as musicians. The biggest difference is that at that time we entered the studio without knowing what would be the final outcome; now we have an idea!

Samir:Aren't you in for playing at festivals?

Unfortunately we are not scheduled for imminet festivals. Stay tuned on outìr website
www.goryblister.com

Samir:Where did you play most until now?

Italy of course, but we do hope to play Europewide very soon again!!!

Samir:What was the favorite band you toured with?

We toured with Darkane and Sadus for now. They are great bands for different aspects. Darkane are incredible musicians and play a modern kind of death Metal. Sadus are more traditional, but they were like fathers to us on tour. It was very amazing touring with people I listened to in 1989!

Samir:Okay, that's it for me. Thanks for the answers and do you have a last message for the readers?

Search the Internet for new death metal bands, download them and if you like their music, BUY the records and fuck the major business! You will contribute to keep real death metal alive and free! Listen to Gory Blister stuff, hope you like it! Thank YOU all!
